Born January 10, 1887 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Died January 20, 1962. Carmel, California. American poet. Born to a Presbyterian minister. Since 1916, he left the city and settled in Carmel, where he has continued to sing about the tragic situation of modern people who have become introverted. Many of his poems are based on Greek tragedies and the Old Testament. In Tamar and Other Poems (1924), which established his reputation, he uses the Old Testament motif of incest to describe the tendency of introverted people to become obsessed with self-destruction. The long poem The Tower Beyond Tragedy, included in the same collection, is based on the first two works of Aeschylus's trilogy of tragedies, The Oresteia, and is renowned as a masterpiece. Other works he wrote include "Tamar, the Roan Stallion," a long poem that contrasts civilized man with a powerful and beautiful stallion, "Tamar and Other Poems" (25), a free verse narrative poem about a priest who awakens to a new religion but is driven mad by conflicting desires, "The Women at Point Sur" (27), "Cawdor and Other Poems" (28), "Dear Judas and Other Poems" (29), and many others. He is often criticized for his unique philosophy and for the dark and hopeless content of his poems, but he was a powerful and original religious poet.
