A treaty signed in 1833 in Kutahya, western Anatolia (Asia Minor) between the Ottoman Empire and Muhammad Ali of Egypt. When Egyptian troops invaded Anatolia from Syria in 1831-32, Sultan Mahmud II requested Russian support (see Treaty of Unkirskelessi), but the British and French, fearing the expansion of Russian influence in the Ottoman Empire, mediated the conclusion of this treaty. As a result, the Ottoman Empire recognized Syria, Adana, and Crete as Egyptian territory.
