American theories of crime and delinquency in the sociology of crime from the 1930s to the 1950s can be broadly divided into two streams: the Chicago School theory, which focuses on the process of individuals' contact with delinquent culture and the transmission of delinquent culture, and the anomie theory, which sees crime and delinquency in relation to social structure. The Chicago School developed two related theories: Shaw CR and McKay HDM's "cultural transmission theory" and Sutherland EHSutherland's "differential association theory." The former was based on empirical research on delinquent-prone areas and pointed out that there exists a unique delinquent culture there that is transmitted across generations despite changes in residents. ...
