An American aircraft manufacturer. Its predecessor was Pacific Aero Products, founded by William Boeing in 1916, and was renamed Boeing Airplanes in 1917. It manufactured flying boats for the Navy. In the 1920s and 1930s, it expanded through large orders for military aircraft such as trainers, observation aircraft, torpedo bombers, and bombers, and grew significantly as an aircraft manufacturer by developing and producing large bombers such as the B-17 and B-29. After World War II, it successfully developed strategic bombers such as the B-47 and B-52, and in the mid-1950s it entered the civilian transport field. The success of the first jet passenger plane, the 707, established a solid position in the market, and it developed the 720, 727, 737, 747, 757, 767, 777, and 787 to dominate the civilian passenger aircraft market. In addition to civilian and military aircraft, the company also manufactures missiles, missile launch control devices, and vehicles. In 1997, Boeing absorbed the American aircraft manufacturer McDonnell Douglas, and established a foothold in the field of fighter jets with the F-15 Eagle, F/A-18 Hornet, and AV-8B Harrier. In the field of military helicopters, Boeing also produces the AH-64 Apache and CH-47 Chinook.
