A Byzantine-Romanesque cathedral representing Venice, Italy. It was founded around 830 to house the remains of St. Mark (who later became the patron saint of Venice), who had been stolen from Alexandria by Venetian merchants. It was destroyed by fire in 976 during civil war, but was rebuilt in 978. In the 11th century, the current cathedral (1063-73) was built by the then governor, Domenico Contarini (in office 1043-70). It became the seat of a bishop in 1807. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
