Brazilian cinema entered the world cinema history in 1953 when director Lima Barreto's (1905-) film The Wild Man (1952) attracted attention at the Cannes Film Festival, but the driving force behind its rise was Alberto Cavalcanti, who started out in French avant-garde cinema, then returned to Brazil after being involved in the British documentary film movement. Cavalcanti, who helped plan and produce The Wild Man, then took an active role in nurturing young filmmakers, contributing to the establishment of the National Film Institute and the film subsidy system.
