Krasnaya gvardiya (English spelling)

…It was established by a decree of the Soviet government dated January 28, 1918, and was renamed the Soviet Army in 1946. The Red Army succeeded the Krasnaya gvardiya, an armed organization of workers formed during the October Revolution, and was organized on a volunteer basis with the goals of defending Soviet power, preparing for the future arming of the entire people, and supporting the European revolution. Volunteers for the Red Army began in earnest when the Brest-Litovsk negotiations (the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk) collapsed and the Soviet government called for the defense of the revolution against the German invasion. February 23, when the registration of large numbers of volunteers began, was later designated as Soviet Army and Navy Day. …
