Great white egret

Japanese: ダイサギ(大鷺) - ダイサギ（英語表記）great white egret

A bird of the heron family in the order Ciconiiformes (illustration). It is about 85 cm long. It is completely white and is the largest species of egret. It is slightly smaller than the grey heron, hence the name Great Egret. It is distributed worldwide, and in Japan there are two types: those that breed as summer birds or migratory birds, and those that migrate from the continent in winter. The former are slightly smaller than the latter, and are sometimes distinguished as the Atlantic egret E. a . modesta (medium-sized heron). The Atlantic egret is also known as the small-legged heron (small-legged white-legged).

コウノトリ目サギ科の鳥（イラスト）。全長約85cm。全身白色で，シラサギ類の中のいちばん大型種である。ダイサギの名もそのためだが，アオサギよりは少し小さい。世界的に分布し，日本には，夏鳥または漂鳥として繁殖するものと，冬期に大陸から冬鳥として渡来するものとが生息する。前者は後者より少し小型で，チュウダイサギE.a.modesta(中大鷺)として区別されることがある。また，チュウダイサギの別名をコモモジロ(小腿白)という。
