San-fa-si (English spelling)

Japanese: 三法司 - さんほうし（英語表記）san-fa-si

A Chinese system. Three judicial offices. During the Tang Dynasty, the Ministry of Justice, the Imperial Censorship Office, and the Dali Temple were called the Sansi, and major judicial cases were decided jointly by the three offices. After the Ming Dynasty, the Imperial Censorship Office was changed to the Metropolitan Censorship Office, and the Ministry of Justice and the Dali Temple were called the Sanfa Si. When a person committed a serious capital crime and should be executed immediately (decision), the Sanfa Si met to deliberate on the document and make a decision.

中国の制度。司法に関する3ヵ所の衙門。唐代には刑部，御史台，大理寺を三司と称し，大きな司法事件は3司が合同して決定した。明代以後，御史台が都察院に変り，これに刑部，大理寺を合せて三法司と称した。重い死罪を犯しただちに死刑を執行さるべきもの (立決) には，三法司が会合のうえ，文書について審議し決定した。
