French engineer. Born in Grenoble. A gifted inventor from an early age, he went to Paris at the age of 26 to study music, anatomy, and mechanics, and researched automatic musical instruments for the theater. He was later appointed factory supervisor, invented a cutter for making gears, and in 1745 produced the world's first model of a power loom. Four years later, he came up with the idea for the patterned loom, paving the way for Jacquard's invention of the Jacquard loom half a century later. Around 1760, he also produced an all-metal lathe with a feed table. He was also absorbed in the creation of automata, and his famous works include the "piper" for a music box device and the "duck" that eats and quacks.

フランスの技術者。グルノーブル生れ。幼時より発明の才にたけ，26歳でパリに出て音楽，解剖学，力学を学び，劇場用の自動楽器を研究した。のち工場の監督に任命され，歯車製造用のカッターを発明し，1745年に世界最初の力織機のモデルを製作，4年後には紋織機を着想し，半世紀後のジャカールによるジャカード織機発明への道をひらいた。また60年ころには全金属製の送り台付旋盤を製作している。自動人形の製作にも没頭し，オルゴール装置の〈笛吹き〉や，餌を食べたり鳴いたりする〈アヒル〉は名高い。
