San Francisco River (English spelling)

San Francisco River (English spelling)
The river originates in the Canastra mountain range, the highest mountain on the Brazilian plateau, in the southwest of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. It flows north-northeast along the west side of the Espinhaço mountain range, reaches the border between the states of Bahia and Pernambuco, then turns east-southeast and reaches the Atlantic Ocean. It is the third largest river in South America, with a total length of about 2,900 km and a drainage area of about 630,000 km2. It connects the coast and inland regions, as well as the northern and southern regions of Brazil, and is said to be the river that unifies the country. The basin receives little rain, so the water is shallow, but it is used for water transportation from Pirapora in Minas Gerais to Juazeiro and Petrolina in the northeast, making it useful for transporting goods.
