Iwashiro Province

Japanese:
Iwashiro Province

This province was established on December 7, 1868 (Meiji 1) when Mutsu Province was divided into five provinces: Iwaki, Iwashiro, Rikuzen, Rikuchu, and Mutsu. Iwashiro Province was formed from ten districts: Aizu, Onuma, Kawanuma, Yama, Iwase, Asaka, Adachi, Shinobu, Katta, and Igu. However, according to the Daijokan Nisshi No. 110 of the following year, 1869, a revision of the division of provinces was made on December 8 of that year, and Iwaki Province's Date District was incorporated into Iwashiro Province, and Katta and Igu Districts were ceded to Iwaki Province. As a result, Iwashiro Province became nine districts with a rice yield of 755,703 koku, 9 to, 6 sho. On August 21, 76, Fukushima Prefecture was established by merging the three prefectures of Fukushima, Iwasaki, and Wakamatsu, and Iwashiro Province became part of Fukushima Prefecture. In 78, Aizu District was divided into Kitaaizu District and Minamiaizu District, resulting in Iwashiro Province having 10 districts. Iwashiro Province originally had almost the same territory as Iwase Province, which existed for a time during the Nara Period, and it is said that the place name Iwashiro was a result of Ishishiro being mistaken for Iwashiro. Either way, once the prefecture system was established, the names of the provinces became nothing more than historical place names.
