Verona (English spelling)
The capital of the province of Verona in the Veneto region in northern Italy. It occupies a bend in the Adige River, which flows out of the Alps and flows into the plains. In ancient times, it was inhabited by the Cenomani people. It became a Roman colony in 89 BC, and a square and an arena were built in the center, and a theater was built on the opposite bank of the river. In the 3rd century, the city played a leading role in the Lombard League in the 12th century, but was taken over by Milan in 1387, and was subject to Venetian rule from the 15th to the 18th centuries. Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is based on a true story from this town. It is the richest city in northern Italy in Roman ruins, and has many medieval buildings such as the 12th-century Lombard-style Basilica of San Zeno Maggiore, an old castle, and a cathedral, and is also known for medieval paintings. It is a tourist city and a key transportation point from Italy to Central Europe. It exports fruits and vegetables, and is also an important grain market. Since 1898, the International Agricultural and Horse Show has been held every year. In addition to machinery and chemical industries, papermaking, sugar refining, and other industries, crafts, precious metal work, marble carving, and other industries are also produced, and the city is particularly famous for its wine production. In 2000, it was registered as a cultural heritage site of the World Heritage Sites. Population: 263,964 (estimated as of 2011).
