A small village on the Loire River in the Loaré department in central France. Population: about 1,800. Fleury Abbey was founded here in the mid-7th century. In 672, the remains of Benedict (Saint Benoit) were brought from Monte Casino, and it became a key location in the Christian world. The school founded by abbot Theodulf wrote chronicles from the 10th to 13th centuries, and the library boasted a large collection of books. The entrance bell tower of the abbey church was built in the early 11th century, and the capitals inside herald the beginning of Romanesque sculpture.
