Ambon [island] - Ambon

Japanese: アンボン[島] - アンボン
Ambon [island] - Ambon
An island in eastern Indonesia, bordering the southwest of Seram Island, belonging to Maluku Province. Also known as Ambon Island. The inhabitants are mainly Ambonese, a mix of Papuan and Malay, who became Christians after the establishment of Dutch rule (17th century) and joined the colonial army in large numbers. Since ancient times, it has been famous as a producer of spices, especially cloves, and a dispute between Britain and the Netherlands over the monopoly of spices escalated into the Ambon Incident in 1623, involving Japanese mercenaries. At the time of Indonesian independence, it refused to be incorporated into the Java-centered Republic of Indonesia, and after 1950, it started a separatist movement for the Republic of South Maluku. Today, the majority of the population is Christian. The capital, Ambon, is a good port and an Indonesian naval base, with a population of 80,000. The area is 816 km2 . In 1999, Christians attacked Muslims in the capital, Ambon, and retaliation battles have spread throughout the Maluku (Moluccas) Islands.
