A small, cylindrical lantern. When folded, the upper and lower frames fit together and can be placed in the sleeve or pocket, so it is also called a pocket lantern, and was mainly used by travelers in the Edo period. It was usually carried in a cloth bag, with a bamboo candle holder or a netsuke attached to the end of the string, and hung from the waist. It was called an Odawara lantern because it was created by a man named Jinzaemon from Odawara (Kanagawa Prefecture), and by the time of the Kyoho era (1716-1736), it had become widely used throughout the country, and as a souvenir lantern, it became one of Odawara's famous products.
