Born: 1646. Near Montdidier [Died] 1715. French orientalist from Paris. From 1670 to 1675 he accompanied the ambassador to Constantinople, and after returning to France he served Louis XIV and collected manuscripts and old coins. He is known for his translation of The Thousand and One Nights, "Mille et une nuits" (12 volumes, 1704-17). He also translated the Quran.
