In 1922, Dziga Vertov, a Russian avant-garde documentary filmmaker known for Man with a Camera/This is Russia (1920), coined the term Kino Pravda in opposition to the newsreels he shot, which served as a supplement to the major newspaper Pravda, and which referred to the films as "newspapers filmed on film (kino)." French film historian Georges Sadoul translated this term literally into French (kino = cinema = film, pravda = verité = truth), and gave it to the new French documentary films that emerged in the late 1950s and 1960s, particularly the series of works by Jean Rouch, a racist who was active in Africa.
