Also known as the Adoration of the Magi, the Adoration of the Magi, or the Adoration of the Three Kings, in English. The word Magi in European originated from Mag (Greek magos), a priest of the Median Kingdom, and has the connotation of astrologer. It is said that they visited Bethlehem at the time of Jesus' birth and blessed him (Matthew 2:1-12, etc.). Their names were Gaspar (Caspar), Balthazar, and Melchior, and their gifts were gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The festival of Epiphany commemorates their visit. It has been a common subject for painting since ancient times.

〈マギの礼拝〉〈東方三博士の礼拝〉〈三王来朝〉などともいい，英語でAdoration of the Magi。欧語のマギは元来メディア王国の神官たるマグ（ギリシア語マゴス）に由来し，占星術師との含意がある。イエスの誕生に際してベツレヘムを訪れ，祝福したと伝える（《マタイによる福音書》２：１―12ほか）。名はガスパル（カスパル），バルタザル，メルキオル，贈物は黄金，乳香，没薬であったとされる。彼らの来訪を記念するのが公現祭。古来作例の多い画題となっている。
