…First, in 1867 (Keio 3), the Satsuma Domain opened the Kagoshima Spinning Mill in Kagoshima using British-made machinery. In 1870, the Satsuma Domain also opened the Sakai Spinning Mill in Sakai (which became government-run in 1872), and in 1872, Kashima Manpei, a cotton wholesaler in Tokyo, established the Kashima Spinning Mill in Takinogawa, Tokyo. These three factories are known as the “Three Founding Spinning Mills” of Japan. …
