Acrylonitrile - Acrylonitrile (English spelling)

An unsaturated nitrile. Its official name is 2-propenenitrile, but it is commonly called acrylonitrile. It is also called vinyl cyanide, cyanoethylene, and acrylic acid nitrile.

A liquid with a unique sweet smell. Industrially, it is synthesized by the Sohio process using ammoxidation of propylene (CH ₂ =CH-CH _{3 )} , ammonia (NH _{3 )} , and oxygen (air) with a molybdenum catalyst. It further reacts with ammonia and oxygen to produce acetonitrile (CH ₃ CN) as a by-product.

It is highly toxic and dangerous when present in the air at 20 ppm or more. It is hydrolyzed to acrylic acid amide and acrylic acid. It is highly reactive and becomes a cyanoethylating agent that introduces the cyanoethyl group _-CH2CH2CN through an addition reaction. It is easily polymerized and copolymerized, and its polymer polyacrylonitrile is used as synthetic fiber, its copolymer with butadiene as synthetic rubber ₍ NBR), and its copolymer with butadiene-styrene as ABS resin. It is also used as a raw material for carbon fiber, paint, and organic synthesis. It is flammable and will explode when mixed with air at 3-17%, so it should be stored in a well-ventilated place and handled with care.

不飽和ニトリルの一つ。正式には2-プロペンニトリルというが、一般的にはアクリロニトリルといわれている。シアン化ビニル、シアノエチレン、アクリル酸ニトリルともいう。

　独特の甘いにおいのする液体。工業的には、モリブデン系触媒を用いてプロピレンCH₂=CH-CH₃、アンモニアNH₃、酸素（空気）を原料とするアンモ酸化によるソハイオ法で合成されている。アンモニア、酸素とさらに反応してアセトニトリルCH₃CNを副生する。

　猛毒であり、空気中に20ppm以上含まれると危険である。加水分解されるとアクリル酸アミド、アクリル酸となる。反応性が高く、付加反応によりシアノエチル基-CH₂CH₂CNを導入するシアノエチル化剤となる。重合や共重合しやすく、重合体のポリアクリロニトリルは合成繊維として、ブタジエンとの共重合体は合成ゴム（NBR）として、ブタジエン・スチレンとの共重合体はABS樹脂として用いられる。そのほか炭素繊維、塗料、有機合成原料となる。可燃性であるうえに、空気に3～17％混和すると爆発するので、換気のよい所で保存し、取扱いに注意する。
