Sherif (English spelling) Ech-Cheliff
Formerly called El-Asnam (until 1981) and Orléansville (until 1964), it is the capital of the prefecture of the same name in northern Algeria. It is located about 180 km southwest of the capital, Algiers. It was built in 1843 as a French military fort on Roman ruins, but with the opening of the Oran-Alger railway in 1870, its location at the junction of a branch line to the port of Tenès, and the completion of irrigation facilities in the surrounding valley plain of the Cherif River, it developed into a distribution center for agricultural products, mainly grains, grapes, and cotton. It also has printing, leather, and fruit juice canning factories. After the departure of the French, who made up the majority of the population, a larger number of immigrants moved in from the surrounding mountain areas. Population: 129,976 (estimated 1987).
