In 625 BC, Babylon gained independence from Assyria, captured the Assyrian capital of Nineveh in 612 BC, and destroyed the defeated Assyrian army at Haran in 610 BC. He built palaces and temples in Babylonian cities, laying the foundation for the rise of the empire.
