Maspero, Gaston Camille Charles
Born: June 23, 1846 in Paris
Died June 30, 1916. Paris. French archaeologist and Egyptologist. He traveled to Egypt in 1880, and the following year succeeded A. Mariette as Director of the Department of Archaeology and Director of the Cairo Museum, where he devoted himself to the administration of Egyptian cultural properties. He left behind outstanding research on Egyptian history, religion, and archaeology, and is known in particular for his investigation of the Saqqara pyramids and the discovery of the Pyramid Texts. His main works include Histoire ancienne des peuples de l'Orient Classique (History of the Ancient Orient) (3 volumes, 1895-97) and Études de mythologie et d'archéologie égyptiennes (Studies in Egyptian Mythology and Archaeology) (8 volumes, 1893-1916).

Born: December 15, 1883 in Paris
[Died] March 17, 1945. Buchenwald concentration camp. French sinologist. Son of G. Maspero. Studied under É. Chavannes, and later engaged in research at the Ecole franco-eastern in Hanoi. Became professor at the Collège de France in 1920, where he taught Chinese linguistics and literature. He came to Japan for a time as director of the Maison Franco-Japonais. He was captured by German forces in Paris during World War II, and died in a German prisoner-of-war camp toward the end of the war. He researched ancient Chinese history, the history of religions such as Buddhism and Taoism, and the history of Vietnam. His main works were La Chine antique (1927) (Ancient China) and Mélanges posthumes sur les religions et l'histoire de la Chine (Religion and History of China) (3 volumes, 50).

フランスの中国学者。 G.マスペロの子。 É.シャバンヌに教えを受け,のちハノイの極東学院で研究に従事。 1920年コレージュ・ド・フランスの教授となり,中国語学,文学の講座を担当。一時日仏会館館長として来日。第2次世界大戦中パリでドイツ軍に捕えられ,戦争末期にドイツ軍捕虜収容所で死亡。中国古代史や仏教,道教など宗教史の研究,あるいはベトナム史の研究を行なった。主著『古代中国』 La Chine antique (1927) ,『中国の宗教と歴史』 Mélanges posthumes sur les religions et l'histoire de la Chine (3巻,50) 。
