A Greek territory on the west coast of Greece, at the northern end of the Ionian Islands. Corfu is its Italian name, and in modern Greek it is called Kerkyra. It produces olive oil, wine, and oranges. It is internationally famous as a tourist destination. It was colonized by the Corinthians around 734 BC, and after a naval battle in 664 BC it came under Corinthian control, but later gained independence and became the second largest naval power after Athens. It was under Venetian control from the end of the 14th century to the end of the 18th century, and was French from 1797 to 1814, then British, before becoming Greek in 1864. The main city is Kerkyra. The old town was registered as a World Heritage Site in 2007.
