観賞に値する美しい花を咲かす樹木をさすが、広義には観賞のため栽培される果実や葉をつけるものも含む。開花期により春夏秋冬の花木に分けられ、熱帯に産するものは四季の区別なく開花するものが多いが、これらは一般的に温室花木あるいは熱帯花木とよばれる。利用面からは次のように分類される。
