Teatro Farnese (English spelling)

...a theater stage that is clearly separated from the audience and that appears to the audience like a framed painting. The oldest surviving example is the Teatro Farnese in Parma, Italy (designed by Giovanni Battista Aleotti in 1618, opened in 1628). This theater not only adopted the perspective background already seen in earlier theaters, but also made this background changeable and installed a permanent proscenium arch, decorated to act as a frame surrounding the stage, at the boundary between the stage and the audience.
