Spoleto (English spelling)

Spoleto (English spelling)
A city in the western foothills of the Apennine Mountains, Umbria, Perugia Province, central Italy. It is located about 100 km north-northeast of Rome, at the southern end of the central plateau. Founded by the Etruscans in the 7th century BC, it became a Roman territory in 241 BC, and defeated Hannibal in 217 BC. It prospered due to its strategic importance on the Via Flaminia, the main artery of the Roman Empire, and in the Middle Ages it flourished as the center of the Duchy of Spoleto in the Lombardy region and one of the most important cities in Italy. There are many ruins, such as an ancient Roman square and an amphitheater, and medieval cathedrals and townscapes with beautiful frescoes remain. It is a distribution center for rich agricultural areas (olive), and light industries such as cotton textiles, leather products, and food are well developed. Since 1958, the "Two Worlds Festival" (music, theater, dance) has been held every year, attracting many spectators. Population: 37,057 (1991 estimate).
