A city in the western foothills of the Apennine Mountains, Umbria, Perugia Province, central Italy. It is located about 100 km north-northeast of Rome, at the southern end of the central plateau. Founded by the Etruscans in the 7th century BC, it became a Roman territory in 241 BC, and defeated Hannibal in 217 BC. There are many ruins, such as an ancient Roman square and an amphitheater, and medieval cathedrals and townscapes with beautiful frescoes remain. It is a distribution center for rich agricultural areas (olive), and light industries such as cotton textiles, leather products, and food are well developed.
