A mineral with a blue color similar to sapphire. It has a composition of 8[(Mg,Fe) 2 - xAl4 + 2xSi1 - xO10 ] and is a plate-shaped crystal belonging to the monoclinic system, but depending on the crystal structure it may be triclinic. Both the crystal structure and chemical formula are yet to be determined. It is pale blue to green, and in thin slices it shows pleochroism from colorless to blue. It is a mineral formed when rocks rich in aluminum and poor in silica undergo severe metamorphism. Its specific gravity is 3.4-3.6, and its Mohs hardness is 7.5. It was named after its blue color similar to sapphire. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
