Traumatic pericarditis

Traumatic pericarditis
This disease occurs when cattle swallow metallic foreign objects such as nails or wires. The inner lining of a cattle's first stomach is honeycomb-like and has powerful contractions, causing the sharp tip of ingested metal to penetrate the second stomach wall, the diaphragm, and reach the pericardial cavity and even the heart. This results in bacterial infection and traumatic pericarditis. Cows with this disease lose their appetite, dislike exercise due to pain, dislike walking downhill, and stand with their left elbow outward when pressure is applied to the affected area. Extracardiac murmurs may also be heard by auscultation.
