A commercial, industrial, and military port city on the Pacific coast of California, USA. Population: 1.15 million (1994, 6th in the US), metropolitan population: 2.6 million (1992). Located in the southern part of the state, close to the Mexican border, with a subtropical Mediterranean climate with an average temperature of 20°C in summer and 14°C in winter, the city enjoys a thriving tourist industry with beaches and fishing. Founded in 1769, it was named after a Spanish saint. After passing through Spain and Mexico, it became a US territory in 1848, but developed as a base for the fishing industry due to its excellent natural harbor.
