An official in the Nara period. Son of Prince Niitabe, son of Emperor Tenmu. Originally called Shioyaki-no-O. Older brother of Prince Funato. Wife of Princess Fuwa. In 742 (Tenpyo 14), he was exiled to Mishima, Izu Province, for a crime, but was pardoned four years later and restored to his rank of Junior Fourth Rank. In March 757 (Tenpyo Houji 1), when Crown Prince Prince Doso was deposed, he became a candidate for the crown prince, but was rejected because he had committed a crime first. In July of the same year, he participated in the rebellion of Tachibana Naramaro and was captured, but was pardoned as it was unbearable to cut off Prince Niitabe's family line, and the following year he was given the surname Hikami Mahito. He later became Middle Counselor and also held the position of Minister of Education (Shikibu), but in 764, when Fujiwara no Nakamaro rebelled, he set up a salt-burning temple and proclaimed himself the current emperor, and was executed by beheading along with Nakamaro. It is said that Toshodaiji Temple was built in his residence (the former residence of Prince Nittabe).
