… The city was founded in 1536 by the Spaniard Pedro de Mendoza on the banks of the Riachuelo River, but was destroyed in 1541 by attacks from natives, and the city's settlers moved to Asuncion (now in Paraguay). It was later rebuilt in 1580 by the Spaniard Juan de Garay, but the city's hinterland was not blessed with the products that Spain wanted, such as precious metals and tropical products, like Mexico and Peru, and it remained a remote part of the Peruvian colony. All trade had to go through Lima on the Pacific coast, so the port of Buenos Aires became a base for smuggling. …
