Omega Nebula

Omega Nebula

A large emission nebula in Sagittarius (M17, NGC6618). It was named after the bright loop-like structure that resembles the Greek letter Ω (omega). It is also called the Swan Nebula and other similar names. Its shape is irregular, but its apparent size is about 20 arc minutes, which is comparable to the size of the full moon (30 arc minutes). Its brightness is about 8th magnitude. It is about 4,200 light years away from Earth, and its actual size is about 20 light years. It is one of the most active star-forming regions in the Milky Way, and a dark nebula can be seen next to it. When observed in detail with the Hubble Space Telescope, it is possible to see a huge accretion disk (a high-temperature disk made of gas falling from the surroundings) falling onto a protostar, and the interaction between the stellar wind spewing from a newborn massive star and interstellar material, making it a valuable experimental site for investigating star formation activity. It is also popular as a popular subject for astronomical photography because it can be seen with a small telescope.
