Born: September 8, 1886, Brenchley, Kent
[Died] September 1, 1967. Heytesbury, Wiltshire. British poet. Jewish. He enlisted at the outbreak of World War I and received the Military Cross. However, he became anti-war after experiencing the horrors of trench life in France. He published satirical and critical poems on war, such as Counterattack (1918) and War Poems (19), and became the leading war poet. His experiences were also the subject of his autobiographical trilogy, The Complete Memoirs of George Sherston (36), the first of which is Memoirs of a Fox Hunting Man (28). After The Heart's Journey (28), his poems became increasingly meditative. Complete Poems (47). He also wrote a biography of Meredith.

イギリスの詩人。ユダヤ系。第1次世界大戦勃発と同時に従軍，戦功十字章を受けるほどの勲功を立てたが，フランス戦線の塹壕生活の悲惨を体験して反戦的となり，『逆襲』 Counterattack (1918) ，『戦争詩』 War Poems (19) などの戦争風刺，批判の詩を発表，いわゆる戦争詩人の第一人者となった。『狐猟人の思い出』 Memoirs of a Fox Hunting Man (28) を第1部とする自伝小説の3部作『ジョージ・シャーストン回想録』 The Complete Memoirs of George Sherston (36完結) もこの体験を扱ったもの。『心の旅路』 The Heart's Journey (28) 以後の詩は次第に瞑想的となった。『全詩集』 (47) 。ほかにメレディスの伝記などがある。
