The ratio of the number of atoms of the two naturally occurring isotopes of strontium, ⁸⁷ Sr and ⁸⁶ Sr. ⁸⁶ Sr is only produced during element synthesis, but ⁸⁷ Sr is produced by the decay of ⁸⁷ Rb (rubidium 87), so the value of ⁸⁷ Sr/ ⁸⁶ Sr in a sample increases over time in roughly proportion to the value of ⁸⁷ Rb/ ⁸⁶ Sr (rubidium-strontium method). Research on meteorites has determined that the value at the time of the formation of the solar system was 0.699, and the Earth was born with this value. When the Earth's crust differentiates from the mantle, both Sr and Rb are transferred to the crust, but Rb is more likely to transfer.
