...In 614, the army of Khosrow II of the Sassanid Empire occupied Jerusalem and took away the cross that was said to have been used in the crucifixion of Jesus. In 629, the Byzantine Emperor Heraclius recaptured the cross and returned to Jerusalem in triumph, but it was only in 637, just eight years later, that the Muslim Arab armies laid siege to Jerusalem. In 638, the Patriarch of Jerusalem, Sophronius, surrendered to the Caliph Umar I, who personally traveled to the city. He met with Sophronius and assured the Christian inhabitants of the safety of their dhimmis and the protection of their churches. He is said to have discovered under the sediment the rock that was the starting point of the Prophet Muhammad's miraj and led prayers beside it. ...
