A city in the southern part of East Agder province in southern Norway. Facing the Skagerrak strait, with a population of 12,000 (1991), it first appeared on records in 1528 as a timber shipping point for the Netherlands, and continued to develop, becoming Norway's number one shipping center from the 1830s onwards. Today, it remains a shipping port for iron ore, timber, wood pulp, feldspar, industrial products and fish. Approximately 30% of the city's residents work in the manufacturing and construction industries, and it is home to Norway's largest incandescent lamp factory.
