The patrilineal clan structure of Indian Brahmins. Clan names are derived from ancient sages, and members of the same clan are believed to have been born of the same sage, with restrictions imposed that members of the same clan may not intermarry. The oldest document in India, the Rig-Veda, is a collection of hymns passed down among clans and compiled by each clan.
