…After a century of Christianity, however, Salah al-Din recaptured Jerusalem in 1187, and a large congregational prayer service was held at the Aqsa Mosque. The Haram al-Sharif was cleaned and rebuilt. The Maghāriba Mosque (also called the Burak Mosque) was also built along the western wall of the same area, at the place where the winged horse Burak, which carried Muhammad on his night journey, was tied up. After Jerusalem was restored, Salah al-Din allowed Christians to visit and live in the city even while the war with the Crusaders was continuing, and Jerusalem under Muslim rule was once again open to both Christians and Jews. …
