A circular fortress on the right bank of the Tiber River that flows through Rome, the capital of Italy. At the top of the castle stands a marble statue of Archangel Michael, made by Raffaello da Montelupo in the 16th century. It is the only fortress in Rome, and is within walking distance of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican. Originally , in 135, the Roman Emperor Hadrian began construction of it as his own mausoleum, and it was completed four years later in 139. It was later converted into a military facility, and in the 14th century it began to be used as a papal fortress and prison. When Holy Roman Emperor Charles V invaded Rome in 1527, Pope Clement VII barricaded himself in the castle to resist. The philosopher and astronomer Giordano Bruno (1548-1600), who advocated the heliocentric theory, was also imprisoned in the fortress for seven years before being burned at the stake. Currently, this fortress is a military museum (National Museum of Castel Sant'Angelo). The marble statue of Archangel Michael on the top of the building is a replica, the real one is inside the building. ◇The local name is "Castel Sant'Angelo".

イタリアの首都ローマ市内を流れるティベレ川右岸にある円形の要塞。城の頂上に、16世紀のラファエッロ・ダ・モンテルーポ作の大天使ミカエルの大理石像が建っている。ローマ市内唯一の城塞で、バチカンのサンピエトロ大聖堂から徒歩圏内にある。もともとは135年に、ローマ帝国のハドリアヌス帝が自身の霊廟(れいびょう)として建設を開始し、4年後の139年に完成した建物だが、のちに軍事施設に変わり、14世紀ごろになるとローマ教皇の要塞や監獄として使われるようになった。1527年、神聖ローマ皇帝カール5世のローマ侵攻の際には、教皇クレメンス7世はこの城に立て篭もって抵抗した。また、地動説を唱えた哲学者・天文学者のジョルダノ・ブルーノ（1548～1600年）は、火刑に処せられる前の7年間、この城塞に幽閉された。現在、この城塞は軍事博物館（国立サンタンジェロ城博物館）になっている。なお、建物の頂上に建つ大天使ミカエルの大理石像はレプリカで、本物は場内にある。◇現地名は「Castel Sant'Angelo」。
