Konoike Zenemon - Konoike Zenemon

Japanese: 鴻池善右衛門 - こうのいけぜんえもん
Konoike Zenemon - Konoike Zenemon
The name of the head of the Konoike family, a wealthy merchant family in Osaka during the Edo period. The first head, Masanari (1608-1693), was the son of Yamanaka Shinroku, the founder of the Konoike family, and is said to be the grandson of Yamanaka Shikasuke, a military commander of the Amago clan. From 1650, the family started a sake brewing and transportation business, and in 1656, they started a money exchange business, becoming known as the Ten Money Exchanges. The second head took the name Kiemon, but from the third head, Munetoshi (1667-1736), onwards, the family took the name Zen'emon. During Munetoshi's time, they developed Konoike Shinden in Kawachi, and worked as a merchant for various feudal domains, solidifying the foundations of the family. In 1688, the number of feudal lords doing business with the Konoike family reached 32 feudal domains. The Meiji Restoration took place during the reign of the 10th lord, Kotomi (1841-1920), and the Konoike family remained involved in most of the companies established in Osaka even after the Restoration. They controlled the Kansai financial world, centering on the Thirteenth National Bank established in 1877 (the Konoike Bank of 1897, the predecessor of Sanwa Bank), and came to be known as the Konoike zaibatsu, but this did not lead to the formation of a modern conglomerate.
