Puppet government

Puppet government

A government that is manipulated by another country. It is established in semi-colonies or occupied countries that are formally independent but in reality have the same status as colonies, in order to camouflage colonial rule, invasion, and occupation. Examples include the "Manchukuo" government that Japan established after its invasion of China, the Mongolian United Autonomous Government, the Nanjing National Government of Wang Jingwei, and the governments established in various parts of Southeast Asia (Burma, Indonesia, the Philippines, etc.) occupied by Japan during the Pacific War. Other examples include the Vichy government of France occupied by Nazi Germany during World War II and the Quivisling government in Norway. After World War II, typical examples include the Bao Dai government established during France's war of aggression to prevent the independence of its former colony Vietnam, and the Ngo Dinh Diem government established by the United States to maintain control over South Vietnam after the Geneva Agreement (1954).
