A town in the Charente-Maritime department in western France. Formerly the capital of Saintonge province, it was later the capital of Charente-en-Férieurs (now Charente-Maritime) department from 1791 to 1810. It overlooks the lower reaches of the Charente River. A town dating back to Gallo-Roman times, it distributes cognac and other products from the surrounding area, and has industries such as vehicle, ready-made clothing, and shoe manufacturing. There are many ruins and old buildings, including an amphitheater from the Roman provincial period, a bridge arch, Marie Basilica (11th-12th century), and the 15th century Cathedral of Saint-Pierre.
