Akakokko (English name) Seven Islands thrush

A bird of the family Muscicapidae, subfamily Turdus, order Passeriformes, class Aves. A species endemic to Japan. It breeds and winters on the Izu Islands of Toshima, Niijima, Shikinejima, Kozushima, Miyakejima, Mikurajima, Hachijojima, and Aogashima. They live in large numbers, regardless of the vegetation, from coasts to mountaintop forests. It is similar in both form and ecology to the closely related Red-throated Blue-and-White, but its color is darker and it has thin yellow rings around its eyes. It is about 23 centimeters long. It often pecks at insects hiding underneath by scratching fallen leaves with its feet as it hops around on the ground. It also eats a lot of nuts. It builds nests on the branches of bamboo or sea hydrangeas, and lays 3 to 4 eggs.

鳥綱スズメ目ヒタキ科ツグミ亜科の鳥。日本特産種。伊豆諸島の利(と)島、新(にい)島、式根島、神津(こうづ)島、三宅(みやけ)島、御蔵(みくら)島、八丈島、青ヶ島で繁殖し、越冬する。海岸から山頂の林まで、植生の違いにかかわりなく、数多く生息している。形態、生態ともに近縁のアカハラによく似ているが、色がより濃く、目の周囲には細い黄色の輪がある。全長約23センチメートル。地上を跳ね歩きながら落葉を足でかいて、下に潜む昆虫などをついばむことが多い。木の実もよく食べる。タケやハマアジサイなどの枝上に巣をかけ、3～4個の卵を産む。
