A bird of the family Muscicapidae, subfamily Turdus, order Passeriformes, class Aves. A species endemic to Japan. It breeds and winters on the Izu Islands of Toshima, Niijima, Shikinejima, Kozushima, Miyakejima, Mikurajima, Hachijojima, and Aogashima. They live in large numbers, regardless of the vegetation, from coasts to mountaintop forests. It is similar in both form and ecology to the closely related Red-throated Blue-and-White, but its color is darker and it has thin yellow rings around its eyes. It is about 23 centimeters long. It often pecks at insects hiding underneath by scratching fallen leaves with its feet as it hops around on the ground. It also eats a lot of nuts. It builds nests on the branches of bamboo or sea hydrangeas, and lays 3 to 4 eggs. [Nobuo Takeshita] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
