Santarém (English spelling)

Japanese: サンタレン(英語表記)Santarém
Santarém (English spelling)
A city in the western part of the state of Para in northern Brazil. The central settlement is a river port city located on the right bank of the lowermost part of the Tapajos River, a tributary of the Amazon River, about 700 km west of the state capital, Belem. It began with the construction of a Jesuit mission in 1661, and later a settlement was formed around a fortress, and in 1848 it became a city. It is currently the commercial center of the Tapajos River basin, and ships rosewood oil, rubber, timber, jute, and other crops produced along the coast. The Santarem Plateau, about 120 meters above sea level to the south of the city, is one of the most fertile agricultural areas in the Amazon basin, and is home to a thriving cultivation of rice, beans, cassava, and other crops. Alumina and oil refinery factories are also located here. It is the largest city along the Amazon River between Belem and Manaus, and serves as a port of call for ocean-going ships traveling up the river, as well as the starting point of shipping on the Tapajos River, where ocean-going ships can travel up the river about 270 km upstream from the city, and river boats can travel further upstream. In 1976, the TransAmazon Highway, which runs north from Cuiabá, the capital of Mato Grosso state, was opened to the city, making it a key location for land transportation. Population: 265,105 (1991 estimate).
