Lake Akimoto - Akimotoko

Also known as Lake Agatsuma. A lake in the northeastern foot of Mt. Bandai in northern Fukushima Prefecture. It is one of the three Urabandai lakes, along with Lake Hibara and Lake Onogawa. It has an area of 3.6 ^km2 and a circumference of 20 km. Its maximum depth is 33.2 m, its elevation is 725 m, and its water transparency is 3.3 m. It was formed in July 1888 when the Nakatsugawa and Okuragawa rivers were dammed by an explosion of Mt. Bandai. At that time, the villages of Ogozawa, Hosono, and Akimoto were all buried. The lake water becomes the Nagasegawa River and flows into Lake Inawashiro. The lake shore is rich in variety, and the Nakatsugawa Valley is a famous spot for fresh greenery and autumn leaves. There is a large virgin beech forest, and along the valley are Kuroname Hachicho and Shiraname Hachicho. As the lake surface is at a lower elevation than Lake Hibara and Lake Onogawa, there is a power plant that utilizes the difference in altitude. It belongs to Bandai-Asahi National Park.

別称吾妻湖。福島県北部，磐梯山北東麓にある湖。檜原湖，小野川 (おのがわ) 湖と並び裏磐梯三湖の1つ。面積 3.6km²，周囲 20km。最大水深 33.2m，標高 725m，透明度 3.3m。 1888年7月磐梯山の爆発により，中津川，大倉川がせきとめられてできた。その際，雄子沢，細野，秋元の集落はすべて埋没。湖水は長瀬川となり猪苗代湖に注ぐ。湖岸は変化に富み，中津川渓谷は新緑と紅葉の名所。大規模なブナの原生林，および渓谷沿いに黒滑八丁，白滑八丁がある。湖面標高が檜原湖・小野川湖より低いため，高度差を利用した発電所がある。磐梯朝日国立公園に属する。
