The shallowest depth is 32m. The shallowest depth of the southern bank is 71m. The name is a corruption of "shoal sea" (sea of shallows) into "se no umi" (sea of rapids), with "se" meaning coral. Continuing south from Sekai Sea is the Kinsu rapids off the coast of Omaezaki. The eastern side of these shallow banks drops into the Suruga Trough, and the western side borders the Sagara Trough (Sekai Sea Basin).
