...A type of wind instrument. Invented by French military bandmaster W. Sarrus, it was made by PL Gothrott and patented in 1856. It is a brass, flared conical tube played by a double reed, and is thick for its length. From small high-pitched instruments to large low-pitched instruments, they were made to form an orderly series of either B-flat or E-flat, with the lowest-pitched double bass being the only one that is made in both E-flat and B-flat, as well as C. The intention behind the invention was to enrich wind ensembles and other music with a rationally designed double-reed instrument, and was probably inspired by the success of the saxophone. ...

…管楽器の一種。フランスの軍楽隊長サリュスW.Sarrusの考案によりP.L.ゴトロが製作，1856年特許。シンチュウ製，末広がりの円錐管をダブル･リードで鳴らすもので，長さの割に太い。小型の高音楽器から大型の低音楽器まで，基調を変ロ，変ホのいずれかにとって，整然とした一系列を成すように作られたが，最低音のコントラバスだけは変ホ，変ロの両種のほか，ハのものもある。考案意図は合理的な設計によるダブル･リード楽器によって吹奏楽などの充実を図ることにあり，サクソフォーンの成功に刺激されたものであろう。…
