...A type of wind instrument. Invented by French military bandmaster W. Sarrus, it was made by PL Gothrott and patented in 1856. It is a brass, flared conical tube played by a double reed, and is thick for its length. From small high-pitched instruments to large low-pitched instruments, they were made to form an orderly series of either B-flat or E-flat, with the lowest-pitched double bass being the only one that is made in both E-flat and B-flat, as well as C.
