American philosopher. Born in Spain, he moved to the United States at the age of nine. After studying in Germany, he taught at his alma mater, Harvard University, from 1907 to 1912. He moved to Europe at the start of World War I, and wrote mainly in Rome until his death. Starting from critical realism, he formulated his own philosophical system in four volumes of The World of Being (1927-1940). In it, the realms of essence, matter, truth, and spirit are explained from the animal belief that is the basis of human cognition. Many of his other works were published in the United States, and his ideas, strongly influenced by materialistic naturalism and skepticism in opposition to German idealism, along with the appeal of his poetic prose, had a widespread impact on American society.
